What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is considered one of the oldest medical systems in the world and the first writings referring to Ayurveda date back to 1200 B.C.E.

The wisdom of Ayurveda and its medical concepts were recorded years ago in Sanskrit and the meaning of Ayurveda is “The Knowledge of Life” (ayus = life, veda = science).

Although Ayurveda is sometimes viewed by the West as an esoteric science and it is not very well known in the American continent, the truth is that Ayurveda is a practical science that can be applied to everyone’s life. As a medical system, Ayurveda has continued to be one of the world’s most refined mind-body wellbeing practices. The holistic philosophy is based in different methods, including vegetarianism to obtain healthy phytonutrients, yoga exercises, meditation practices, breathing techniques, and massage therapy for pain relief, stress management and better quality of life.  Ayurveda offers a frame of wisdom to sustain people’s vibrant health while exploring full human potential.

In general, Ayurveda teaches us that to be truly healthy, we need to pay attention to our physical bodies, as well as to examine the health of our minds, spirits, and the environment around us.

With Ayurveda we can experience a state of wholeness and the ancient science includes the following main components:

  • Prana – Life Power or Energy

  • The Chakras – Energy wheels in the human body

  • The five elements – ether, air, fire, water, earth

  • The Three mind-body types or Doshas: Vata (air/ether), Pitta(fire/water), and Kapha (earth/water)
